Mass Spec uses thermal desorption to reduce sample preparation and processing times

Mass Spec uses thermal desorption (TD) as a rapid way of introducing substances into its mass spectrometers. Most conventional analytical methods for the detection of drugs involve taking materials into solution, and injecting that solution into a mass spectrometer using a syringe. Not only is this approach time consuming, but the glassware, solvents and other equipment used are all potential sources of cross contamination; sources which have to be eliminated by running controls and blanks.

 

 

A further advantage of thermal desorption is that it allows the direct analysis of very dirty samples, such as dust collected from household vacuum cleaners or from vehicles. Conventional analysis using GC/MS would require the sample to be cleaned up, extracted, filtered, and possibly derivatised, prior to analysis. The TD/MS/MS approach allows such analyses to be performed in a matter of seconds without recourse to sample pre-treatment.
